SU Volleyball Defeats Canisius in Five Games

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Head coach Jing Pu recorded his 200th win at Syracuse as the Orange defeated Canisius, 3-2, on Wednesday night, Oct. 13. SU won the first two games, 30-18 and 30-26, before allowing Canisius to win the next two games, 30-27 and 30-28. The Orange was able to win the final game, 15-11. SU improves to 17-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST, while Canisius is now 7-10 overall.
Freshman Cheryl Cobbina recorded her first career double-double as she led the Orange for just the second time this season with 14 kills and recorded a career-high 18 digs. Cobbina also recorded her first career assist. Junior Kathryn Dercher also recorded a double-double with 12 assists and 18 digs, which tied her career-high in digs.
Junior Aila Dommestrup was the Orange’s leading setter with 48 assists, while freshman Joscie Kaup led the SU defense making 25 digs. Junior Kelly Duan was second on the team in kills with 13. Duan also recorded one ace in the match to move her into a tie for 10th on SU’s all-time service aces list with 109.
Junior Kristen Conway and senior Morgan Jones both had their 1,000th career kill in the match. Conway now has 1,005 and Jones as 1,002 for their careers.
This was the best defensive performance by the Orange this season, recording a season-high 95 digs in the match.
For Canisius, Kim Hoffman and Christina Wildes recorded double-doubles. Hoffman recorded 21 kills and made a match-high 27 digs. Wildes had a match-high 26 kills and 16 digs.
The Orange plays its final match of a five-match road-trip when it travels to Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
