
Orange Football Loses, 31-10, At #12 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Syracuse football team lost to #12 Virginia, 31-10, Saturday afternoon at the Carl Smith Center in Charlottesville, Va. Senior tailback Walter Reyes had 83 yards on 24 carries and moved into third place on SU's all-time rushing list. Reyes' 2,913 yards is 21 behind Larry Csonka for second place. The Orange is 2-2 on the season and the Cavaliers improve to 4-0.
The Orange drove 68 yards on its opening drive and senior kicker Collin Barber kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Orange a 3-0 lead with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Perry Patterson went 4-for-5 on the first drive for 48 yards. Junior tight end Joe Kowalewski caught two passes for 27 yards and Reyes rushed for 19 yards on five carries on the drive.
The Cavaliers responded with a 59-yard touchdown run by quarterback Marques Hagans to give Virginia a 7-3 lead with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
The Cavaliers added to their lead on a 27-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter by running back Wali Lundy, giving Virginia a 14-3 advantage. Hagans ran for another touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half. The 10-yard run gave the Cavaliers a 21-3 lead at halftime.
The Orange opened the second half with an 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by a two-yard run by junior Damien Rhodes. Reyes rushed eight times for 30 yards on the drive and senior wide receiver Jared Jones caught two passes, both on third downs.
Virginia kicker Connor Hughes kicked a 36-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give the Cavaliers a 24-10 lead. The Cavaliers added a 39-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter from Hagans to Michael McGrew to make the score 31-10.
The Orange drove 76 yards late in the third quarter but could not convert on a fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line.
Patterson finished the game 15-for-23 for 141 yards. Rhodes had 10 carries for 34 yards and one touchdown, his second of the season. Jones led the Orange receivers with seven receptions for 70 yards, while Kowalewski finished with three catches for 40 yards.
Hagans finished with 202 yards and one touchdown on 11-for-12 passing and 81 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Lundy had 80 yards on 18 rushes and one touchdown and McGrew finished with four recrptions for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker Jerry Mackey finished with 17 tackles, including 13 solo, four for a loss and his first career sack. The sack was the first one suffered by Hagans this season.
The Orange hosts Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Carrier Dome at 12 p.m.
