
Syracuse Wins First BIG EAST Match

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team won its first BIG EAST match, 3-0, against Virginia Tech behind the strong play at the net by senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) and junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) on Sunday afternoon at Manley Field House.
The Orangewomen outblocked the Hokies, 11-4. Carroll dominated at the net with a career-high five solo blocks. SU’s setter also had five kills, 28 assists and nine digs. Van Mater tied a career high with three solo blocks and one block assist. She also chipped in a match-high 12 kills on 21 attempts with four errors for a .381 attack percentage. Senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) tallied nine kills and seven digs, and freshman Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) served up three aces along with seven kills.
As a team, Syracuse hit .234 compared to Virginia Tech’s .148. Annie Spicer and Ana Lang led the Hokies with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. SU’s record stands at 6-6 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play, while Virginia Tech drops to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in BIG EAST play.
Syracuse continues its homestand on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it faces Binghamton in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at Manley Field House.
