Volleyball Defeats Binghamton, 3-1

SYRACUSE, NY - Five players in double figures led the Syracuse University women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against Binghamton on Wednesday night at Manley Field House. SU’s overall record now stands at 7-6, while Binghamton drops to 3-10 on the season.
After losing the first game, 24-30, Syracuse came back to take the next three, 30-27, 30-23 and 30-22. SU’s offense was led by senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) who recorded a season-high 14 kills and also chipped in eight digs. Freshman Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) tallied 13 kills on 28 attempts with four errors for a .321 attack percentage. Fellow freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) had 11 kills on 22 attempts with four errors for a career-high .318 hitting percentage, and junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) hit in double figures for the third straight match with 11 kills. Freshman Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) was error free with eight kills on 19 attempts for a .421 attack percentage. As a team, Syracuse hit for .255 compared to Binghamton’s .151.
Syracuse was also strong on defense, outblocking Binghamton, 9-6. Koster tied a career high with three solo blocks and added two block assists. Senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) led the defense with 12 digs, and she also dished out 51 assists. Sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) contributed nine digs.
Michele Heck led the Bearcats with 13 kills and chipped in seven digs. Morgan Jimerson and Anne Crocus followed with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Syracuse takes to the road this weekend to face two BIG EAST opponents and one non-conference team. On Friday, Oct. 5, SU plays Connecticut at 7 p.m. and then Central Connecticut State on Saturday at 2 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 7, the Orangewomen take on Boston College at 1 p.m.
