A standout student-athlete at Northern Illinois, Jason Onyebuagu joined the Syracuse football staff as an offensive graduate assistant in March 2013. Prior to his appointment at Syracuse, Onyebuagu was a graduate assistant and offensive line coach at the University of North Carolina, where the Tar Heels ranked in the top 20 nationally in total offense and scoring in 2012.
At Northern Illinois, Onyebuagu led his team to three bowl games in four seasons. As a senior captain in 2009, he earned All-MAC First Team honors. Onyebuagu played in all 51 games during his career at NIU. In 2010 he was invited to training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars and played for the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League in 2011. He started his coaching career at his high school alma mater, Warren Central, as an assistant offensive line coach in 2010-11. As a player at Warren, Onyebuagu helped lead his team to three state championships and was named 2005 Indiana Mr. Football for offensive linemen.
A native of Indianapolis, Onyebuagu earned his bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Northern Illinois in 2009.
