Quarterback Steve Angeli has been officially named as Syracuse football's starting quarterback, ahead of the team's Sept. 5 matchup with New Hampshire to open the season, head coach Fran Brown announced.
Angeli led the Orange to a 3-1 record, was leading the nation in passing and in the midst of delivering the program's first win in Death Valley vs. Clemson last September, when he suffered a season-ending injury.
A transfer from Notre Dame, Angeli enters his second season with Syracuse after winning the starting job last season as well. He was atop the national leaderboard in nearly every statistical category a year ago before the injury. In four games, he completed 63-percent of his passes for 1,317 yards and 10 touchdowns, with just two interceptions.
Brown brought in talented quarterbacks from the transfer portal to challenge Angeli in spring ball and training camp, as well as provide quality depth at the position. Behind Angeli, former all-conference player Amari Odom, former No. 1 recruit Malachi Nelson, Georgetown starter Danny Lauter and freshman Zaid Lott all enter the room to supplement Angeli, Rich Belin and Joseph Filardi.
Angeli has fully recovered and been cleared with no restrictions this training camp. He'll look to lead an Orange offense that has been dominant through the air over the past two seasons with its starting quarterback. Under offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon, Syracuse's offense has produced record-setting numbers with its QB1. Through 17 games with an active starting QB, Syracuse's offense has led the country in passing yards and went 13-4 in that span.
Syracuse opens the 2026 slate on Saturday, Sept. 5 against New Hampshire. Tickets are on sale now for an exciting slate of games you won't want to miss.
