CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The Orange women's basketball team (18-4, 8-3) defeated Miami (12-10, 4-7) 65-60 on the road. Duo Sophie Burrows and Laila Phelia each tallied 21 points to push Syracuse past the Hurricanes. Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
SU started off the game on a 9-0 scoring streak, keeping the Hurricanes without a bucket for three minutes and 45 seconds off the opening tip. Miami was quick to even the score after scoring their first basket, but the Orange regained a three-point lead once the ball reached Phelia's hands beyond the arc. Burrows knocked in one more three-pointer with just seconds remaining to increase the lead to 16-11 to close out the first quarter.Â
A low scoring second quarter resulted in long scoring droughts for both teams, until Dominique Darius scored a three-pointer. 'Cuse picked up the momentum, as Uche Izoje and Aurora Almon added field goals of their own. Phelia's two shots from the line rounded out the second quarter of play with the Orange leading 29-23.Â
Burrows kicked off the third quarter with a layup through a crowd of Miami defenders. Phelia would later find a wide-open Burrows in the corner to knock in a three-point shot. The guard would go on to lead the team in scoring for the quarter, collecting eight points in total. Phelia followed with five points of her own and Izoje with four points. Syracuse had a 46-35 advantage over the Hurricanes who were held to 12 points this quarter.Â
Another three-pointer by Burrows started a scoring streak for the Orange in the fourth quarter. Syracuse scored on four consecutive drives to gain a 19-point lead over Miami. The Hurricanes went on a scoring run themselves, closing the gap on SU late in the final quarter. Syracuse stood strong, ultimately claiming the 65-60 road victory.Â
