A solid defensive effort by Syracuse (4-4-4, 0-3-1) was not enough and host Cal (6-1-5, 2-0-1) won the first-ever matchup between the two programs, 1-0, in Berkeley.
Orange goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch made six saves in the contest and now is one stop short of tying the Syracuse career record of 344.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
The two played scoreless soccer well into the second half. The Golden Bears finally broke through at 64:39. Elhom Khursand carried toward the endline and slipped a pass to Soleil Dimry, who redirected the ball past Vanderbosch for the only tally of the game. It was Dimry's second goal of the season.
SHEA STOPS
Vanderbosch evenly split her six stops between the two halves. She tallied the first save of the contest, 7:30 into the match, when she was tested by Cal's Lumi Kostmayer. Vanderbosch made consecutive stops in a two-minute span, first off a shot by Dimry at 33:00 and then a drive from Olivia McPherson at 34:38.
She added two saves after the intermission before Cal broke the scoreless duel. She was challenged by Miriam Hils and Coc Thistle, but made the plays to keep the game tied. Vanderbosch made a second save on Kostmayer with just under 12 minutes left to finish with six saves.
ORANGE ATTACK
Mia Klammer, Syracuse's top goal scorer this fall, was the first to threaten for the Orange. She stole the ball in Cal territory, dribbled right and drove the ball on goal, forcing Cal keeper Teagan Wy to come up with the stop at the 13:24 mark. Later in the period, Ashley Rauch carried deep along the right wing. Her centering attempt was deflected by Cal, but ended up on the foot of Anna Rupert, who was stymied by Wy.
Rauch orchestrated another threat in the second half. Set up by a midfield pass from Rupert, Rauch turned and attacked the Bear defense. Rauch crossed over and let fly with her left foot, a shot that forced Wy to layout on the stop at 57:12. Syracuse's other shot-on-goal came from Jasmine Nixon, a long-distance drive that safely cleared the defensive line, forcing a save from Wy.
