
Velez Heads to Preselection with Puerto Rico ahead of FIBA AmeriCup

Syracuse junior guard Angelica Velez has been chosen as one of 14 athletes for Puerto Rico's pre-selection camp ahead of the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup. Preselection camp begins Monday, June 9 and the FIBA AmeriCup is set for June 28-July 6 in Santiago, Chile at Parque Estadio Nacional.

Velez appeared in 26 games in her first season with the Orange, earning six starts. Velez was third on the team in assists per game (2.0) and added 2.6 points in 12.3 minutes per game. She had a career-high 10 assists against Florida State on Jan. 5 adding eight rebounds for a near double-double.

The Bronx, N.Y., native spent her freshman season at LSU where she appeared in 23 games and helped the Tigers to the NCAA Elite Eight. Prior to LSU she was a four-star prospect ranked No. 21 in her graduating class by Prospects Nation. She played at The Webb School in Tennessee and won back-to-back state championships in high school.

Puerto Rico is in Group B for the FIBA Women's AmeiCup and will begin group phase play against Columbia at 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. All games can be streamed online at fiba.com.
