The Syracuse women's basketball team has officially added Laila Phelia for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Phelia, a 6-foot guard from Cincinnati, Ohio, joins the Orange after spending the 2024-25 season at Texas where she was part of the Longhorns NCAA Final Four squad. Prior to Texas, Phelia played three seasons at Michigan and helped the Wolverines to the Elite Eight.
"We are thrilled that Laila has committed to Syracuse University," head coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. "What she brings is a winning pedigree; 72-0 in high school, two Elite Eights and a Final Four. Laila has seen what we are trying to achieve. Most importantly she's a great young lady that has the aspiration to rule the world. What better place ot come than the 'Block S' which has a global signature."
Phelia averaged 8.8 points per game in her freshman season at Michigan en route to helping UofM to the program's first Elite Eight in school history. She had a breakout year as a sophomore averaging 16.7 points per game, 4.2 rebounds and 82.9 percent from the free throw line and averaged 16.8 points as a junior and shot 42.3 percent from the field. Following her junior season she transferred to Texas. An injury held her back from a full season at Texas but in eight appearances she averaged 6.1 points and was shooting a career-best 89.4 percent from the free throw line.
The addition of Phelia brings Syracuse's incoming class to seven with three freshmen and four transfers out of the portal.
