SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse University volleyball team is set for the first home match of the season in the Syracuse/Cornell Invitational on September 15. 'Cuse (1-7) will play both Iowa (6-4) and Morgan State (4-8) over the course of the weekend in the Women's Building. The Orange are looking to win their first home matches of the season before ACC play begins next week.
Â
Taking on their third tournament of the season, the Orange will kick off the invitational against Iowa at 7 p.m. on Friday. 'Cuse will then play Morgan State at 2 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the weekend. Both matches will have live stats available and can be streamed on cuse.com.
Â
The match against Morgan State honors the Syracuse-MEAC Alliance, a 10-year partnership which began in the fall of 2021, scheduling agreement goal of up to 50 competitions between Syracuse and MEAC institutions over the course of the next decade. The goal of the Syracuse-MEAC Alliance is to connect institutions, student-athletes, staff and alumni between Syracuse University and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across the Atlantic coastline that make up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Additional elements of the Alliance include an internship exchange program, various seminars and professional conferences as well as visiting professorships/lectureships. The opening match of the invitational will be the fourth meeting between the Orange and the Hawkeyes. 'Cuse is 1-2 against Iowa, winning the most recent meeting on September 9, 2021, 3-1. The Hawkeyes started off the 2023 season with a 6-4 record, looking to win this weekend before they begin Big Ten play next week.
Â
Syracuse will play Morgan State for the second time in program history on Saturday. 'Cuse is 1-0 against the Bears, winning its only meeting with a sweep on October 30, 1993. The Bears are coming off a win against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Sept. 9, the team's third win at home this season.
Â
The last match for the Orange ended in a loss at Colgate, 3-0, but not without success from junior Cherlin Antonio, who led the team with 14 kills on 33 attacks. Against a powerful Colgate team, freshman Veronica Sierzant totaled four points in the match, hitting four kills on 14 attacks.
Â
After this weekend's invitational, 'Cuse will kick off conference play with a matchup at #2 Louisville on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
