HAMILTON, N.Y. – Syracuse was defeated by Colgate (6-4) on Tuesday night in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-17) at Cotterell Court.
Â
"Overall, it was a tough match for us today because of the number of unforced errors," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "I think we've progressed pretty well so far, this is just a little step back. We've already talked about the things we need to work on. We're going to come together and practice well so we can have a successful home opener against Iowa."
Â
In the first set, 'Cuse (1-7) and Colgate both exchanged early points, but Colgate stretched its lead to 12-5, forcing Syracuse's coach Ganesharatnam to call a timeout. With Colgate ahead 21-11, the Orange called their second timeout of the set to regroup but the Raiders held on to win the first set, 25-12.
Â
The Orange retaliated in the second set, scoring the first four points of the frame and taking the early lead, 8-3. The Raiders proved to be resilient, going on a 6-1 scoring run to tie the set at nine. It was a back-and-forth battle for the entirety of the frame, but the Raiders came out on top, 25-20. The Orange offense was paced by Cherlin Antonio, who had 10 kills on 26 attacks in the first two sets.
Â
Colgate jumped out to an early lead again in the third set, going ahead 8-3 as 'Cuse called timeout. The Raiders extended its lead to 23-13, but the Orange clawed back late in the set backed by a 4-1 scoring run to bring the set total to 24-17 in favor of the Raiders.
