SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team earned a three-set sweep over Ball State to secure its second win of the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament. The Orange (8-1 Overall, 0-0 ACC) had three players record double digits kills, including junior Marina Markova, who recorded a .667 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 24 attempts. That percentage is tied for third highest in program history in an individual match with 20+ attempts.
"Most importantly, the team executed the game plan very well today," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We kept the game plan at the center of our focus and that's what got us here. The team played very well across the board. Polina and Marina were nearly unstoppable at the net."
The Orange took the first set by storm, recording a team hitting percentage of .607. Ball State had no answer to the Orange's attacking success as Syracuse took the first set 25-16. Ball State had more to give in the second, but the Orange offense was unstoppable, earning 17 kills on just 33 attempts in a 25-18 win. The Orange captured the third set in quick fashion, winning 25-13.
Syracuse recorded its second-best single match team hitting percentage (.489) in three sets with 52 kills across 88 attempts with only nine errors.
Of Note:
Syracuse travels to Starkville, M.S. for the Mississippi State Invitational. THe Orange will play Mississippi State on Sept. 17 at 7 pm to open the tournament.
