ATLANTA, GA. – Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play begins for Syracuse Volleyball (3-4) with a matchup at Georgia Tech Friday. The Orange take on the Yellow Jackets in O'Keefe Gymnasium after finishing non-conference play with two wins last weekend over Northeastern and Harvard. Syracuse has won its last three matches and has a 6-4 record all-time against Georgia Tech.
Orange on Top
Sophomore captain Polina Shemanova leads the team in kills (107), points (119), digs (57) and ranks first in the ACC for kills per set (4.46). Freshman Marina Markova currently ranks second in the country in aces per set (0.83) and has tallied 20 total aces on the season. Sophomore setter Elena Karakasi carries the team in assists with 186 in seven matches.
Syracuse has posted 33 service aces in 17 sets played, an average of 1.94 aces per set. This ranks second in the ACC and 14th in the nation.
Milestones on the Horizon
Syracuse head coach Leonid Yelin earned career wins 590 and 591 over Northeastern and Harvard, respectively. Yelin's career record now sits at 591-261 in his 28th season as an intercollegiate coach and eighth as head coach of the Orange. He spent 15 seasons as head coach of Louisville before coming to Syracuse.
The Orange are eight wins shy of 900 in program history. Entering this weekend, Syracuse owns a record of 892-628-10 all-time.
Top-Ranked Opponents
The Orange have played the 12th hardest schedule out of 335 teams in Division I volleyball through the first seven matches. Syracuse's first seven opponents have a combined record of 47-23. 'Cuse opened the season against #11 Baylor (now ranked No. 2) and #17 Marquette (now ranked No. 10). They also face #4 Pittsburgh, #23 Florida State and Louisville (twice) this season in conference play.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech stands at 7-4 on the season but are a perfect 5-0 at home. Freshman Julia Bergmann leads the squad with 151 kills and 19 aces. The team ranks third in the ACC with 14.2 kills per set and a .422 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Matti McKissock has tallied 439 assists so far on the season and the Yellow Jackets rank first in the conference in assists per set (11.26).
Tech volleyball recorded its 700th Division I win following a 3-1 defeat over Lipscomb earlier this season. The Yellow Jackets come into Friday's action after losing to Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent and in-state rival Georgia last Friday.
