SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team (9-15, 1-8) will head out on their final BIG EAST road swing of the season, looking to pick up wins against two conference opponents. The Orange will face Villanova (10-14, 4-5) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. before traveling to Georgetown (7-15, 1-8) to take on the Hoyas on Sunday, Oct. 28th at noon.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Syracuse enters this weekend looking to put an end to a five-game losing streak, after falling to top conference opponents, No. 13 Louisville and Cincinnati in straight sets last weekend. Despite the tough competition, Gosia Wlaszczuk led the Orange offense against the Cardinals with double-digit kills, while Silvi Uattara led the offensive strike against the Bearcats with 11 kills.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Georgetown will enter the weekend on a high note, after snapping a 14-game losing streak with a sweep over DePaul last weekend, to mark their first conference win of the season. Prior to the victory over the Blue Demons, GU had not won a match since Sept. 8th, where they swept Alex Johnson will lead the Hoyas offensive attack with 296 kills on the year, averaging 3.65 kills per set. Dani White and libero MacKenzie Simpson will anchor the defense as White leads the team with 89 blocks, while Simpson is averaging 4.03 digs per set.
Villanova will enter the weekend looking to snap a losing streak, after dropping a four-set match to DePaul before being swept by Notre Dame last weekend. The Wildcats are 4-5 in the conference, led by top offensive attacker Laura Carpenter, who leads the team with 250 kills, averaging 2.75 kills per set. Libero Mariah Henley will lead the defense, averaging 5.85 digs per set, while setter Emma Pettit leads the team averaging 8.05 assists per set.
HEAD-TO- HEAD WITH VILLANOVA AND GEORGETOWN:
The Orange leads Villanova and Georgetown in the all-time series 21-15 and 22-17, respectively. SU went 1-1 against the two opponents in 2011 picking up a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats, but falling to the Hoyas in a tough five-set loss.
UP NEXT:
SU will return home to the Women's Building to begin a four-game homestand to conclude the 2012 regular season. The Orange will host St. John's on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Women's Building before squaring off against UConn on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
