SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball squad (9-14, 1-7) was swept in straight sets (23-25, 12-25, 18-25) by the No. 15 Louisville Cardinals (19-3, 8-1) on Friday afternoon in the Women's Building.
"At this point we are focusing on keeping our heads up heading into Cincinnati and we are just going to keep coming to practice and working as hard as we can every day," head coach Leonid Yelin said.
The Orange opened and maintained offensive pressure in the first set, fighting point for point against the Cardinals. The SU offensive push was not enough to carry SU to a victory in the opening frame as they dropped the first set 23-25,
Looking to rebound in the second set, attacking errors on Louisville assisted SU in closing the lead within three at the 9-12 mark, but the Orange could not overhaul the Cards as they were held to a -.200 hitting percentage, giving the U of L a two-game lead heading into the third set.
Syracuse commanded the lead three times during the third set as a kill from Silvi Uattara put the Orange up 17-16. Despite holding Louisville to a .212 hitting percentage, SU was unable to finish the set to send the match into four sets.
Gosia Wlaszczuk led the Orange offense with 14 kills and five digs, while Nicolette Serratore contributed eight kills and a service ace. Uattara led the Orange at the net with four blocks, including one solo block, while setters Emily Betteridge and Amanda Kullman dished out 25 assists.
Three-time BIG EAST Player of the Week Lola Arslanbekova led the Cardinals offense with a double-double of 18 kills and 12 digs. Middle blocker, Brooke Mattingly and setter, Hannah Kvitle led the defense with six and five blocks, respectively. Emily Juhl added five blocks to assist the Louisville defense.
The Orange will host the Cincinnati Bearcats on Sunday, Oct. 21st at 2 p.m. in the Women's Building before hitting the road to round out BIG EAST play facing Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon.
