Box Score
Orem, Utah – After taking the first two sets, the Syracuse University volleyball team (5-2) was unable to close the match as Utah Valley University (5-2) won the remaining three sets to defeat the Orange (20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13).
Syracuse began the first set with a 5-1 spurt and never relinquished the lead. The Orange would push its margin to as much as six points (13-7) on a kill by Ying Shen, but UVU would get back within one point at 15-14. However, the Orange would close the set 10-6 run to take the opening frame.
With SU trailing 18-16 in the second set, Sam Hinz absolutely took over, recording five kills and a block to solidify the second set victory, 25-21. Hinz finished with career-high 13 kills, while she and fellow middle blocker Lindsay McCabe each registered seven blocks. Hinz leads the BIG EAST in blocks per set while McCabe is tied for second.
The momentum, however, would drastically change coming out of the locker room in favor of the Wolverines. UVU raced out to a 14-3 advantage in the third set, and despite SU's best efforts for a come-back, Utah Valley took set three, 25-19.
The two sides went toe-to-toe in the beginning of the fourth frame until the Wolverines went on a 9-2 run and pushed the score to 18-11. UVU captured the fourth set and forced a decisive game five.
A kill by Nicolette Serratore gave the Orange a 12-10 advantage in the fifth set, but two attacking errors and one service error by SU followed, helping UVU close the match on a 5-1 run for the triumph.
Syracuse had four players (Andrea Fisher, Hinz, McCabe and Serratore) finish with double-digit kill. Ashley Williams once again led the team with 22 digs, while Noemie Lefebvre, who was announced as receiving BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second-consecutive week, chipped in with 14 digs. Setter Laura Homann dished out 50 helpers.
UVU was led offensively by Lindsay Barker who finished with 14 kills, while Chelsey Heaps and Sarah Clement each had 12. Defensively, Erica Nish had 10 blocks and the Wolverines had five players with double-digit digs.
The Orange is back in action this coming Friday and Saturday at the Long Island Invitational where Syracuse will square off with host LIU, Temple and Lehigh.
