BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (5-2) is in action this Friday and Saturday at the Blackbird Invitational, hosted by Long Island University.
The Orange will play tournament host LIU (1-6) in its opening match on Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday will pair SU against Temple (3-3) at 12:30 p.m., and Lehigh (3-2) at 3 p.m. to conclude the tournament. All matches will be played at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.
Syracuse took second place at the Utah State Invitational last weekend with wins over Texas State and Idaho State, while suffering a loss to the host Aggies. The Orange then traveled to Orem, Utah for a single contest with Utah Valley, which UVU won in five sets.
Middle blocker Sam Hinz continued her phenomenal play at the net in Utah. The junior recorded a career-high 11 blocks against Utah Valley. She is leading the BIG EAST in block assists (43), total blocks (48) and blocks per set (1.78).
SU continues to play extremely consistent team defense as the Orange is tops in the conference in opponent hitting percentage, holding the opposition to a .103 hitting clip. SU's 17.04 digs per set is fourth best in conference. Ashley Williams leads SU's back row with 5.33 digs per set, which ranks her fourth overall in the league.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Lehigh: The Mountain Hawks boast the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week in Angelika Kopacz. In five matches this season, Kopacz has registered a double-double in every contest. Last week Kopacz averaged 15.25 kills and 15 digs in four matches while leading Lehigh to a 3-1 mark.
Long Island: The Blackbirds have had a brutal schedule to begin the season. LIU has already played two ranked teams in No. 1 California and No. 20 San Diego, along with playing Virginia of the ACC and Seton Hall of the BIG EAST. Annika Foit is the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. She is second on the team in both kills (67) and digs (66).
Temple: The Owls finished 1-2 at the Big 5 Tournament last weekend with a win over La Salle, and losses to Villanova and Penn. Senior outside hitter Collin Wallace leads the Temple charge as she ranks third in kills per set in the Atlantic 10. She recorded a season-high in kills (24) and digs (18) against La Salle.
