Dr. Susan Helmrich was selected as a Letterwinner of Distinction in 2002. It's the highest honor presented to a former Syracuse student-athlete.

Defying The Odds

After overcoming three different forms of cancer, former Syracuse swimmer Dr. Susan Helmrich recently placed second in the 1,650 and third in the 500 at the U.S. National Masters Swimming Championships in Mesa, Ariz.
Her amazing story of survival and triumph is the subject of a Huffington Post article written by Marc Middleton entitled: Growing Bolder: A Cancer Survival Story Unlike Any Other. The article chronicles Helmrich's 30-year battle with cancer stemming from DES (diethylstilbestrol).
A 2002 Letterwinner of Distinction and 2000 Orange Plus Hall of Fame inductee, Helmrich was the first female swimmer to receive a scholarship at SU. She spent four years on the Orange swimming team and graduated in 1977 with a degree in biology.
