SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sam Hinz had a career-high 14 blocks, including five in the deciding fourth set, to help the Syracuse University volleyball team (16-8, 5-3) defeat Seton Hall (13-10, 4-4) on Sunday afternoon (25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23) at the Women's Building.
The Orange went 3-0 this week and picked up a pair of BIG EAST Conference victories. SU is now fifth in the league standings with six matches remaining. The top eight teams make the conference tournament.
SU doubled up the Pirates in the first set by a mark of 25-12. Noemie Lefebvre had five kills on nine attempts, while Hinz had four total blocks, two of which were solo blocks.
In a more competitive second set, SU erased an early three point deficit and took its first lead at 8-7; a lead the Orange would hold the rest of the set. One of Lindsay McCabe's team-high 14 kills would wrap up the set and give Syracuse a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room.
SU's third set struggles continued as SHU took the frame by a score of 25-21.
It looked as though Seton Hall would force a fifth set with the Pirates up 21-14 in set four, but a furious rally led by Hinz and Nicolette Serratore slashed the Pirate's hopes.
Serratore connected on three straight spikes to narrow the Seton Hall lead to 22-19, then Hinz followed with four consecutive blocks, giving SU a 23-22 lead. A kill by Erin Little and a hitting error by the Pirates' Shelbey Manthrope ended the match.
Lindsay McCabe and Little both reached double-digit kills. Little had 11 spikes and added six assists, eight digs and five blocks to her stat line. The senior has had at least 10 kills in three straight matches.
Ashley Williams had a game-high 24 digs while Laura Homann dished out 38 assists.
The Orange hits the road next weekend with matches at West Virginia (5-15, 3-6) on Saturday and at Pittsburgh (14-10, 4-5) on Sunday. Both matches begin at 2:00 p.m.
