Records Continue to Fall for Swimmers

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Four more school records were set by Syracuse swimmers during day three of the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship. Sophomore Kuba Kotynia led the Orange with a time of 56.17 in the 100 Breaststroke in the preliminaries, good enough for first place. The NCAA 'B' time bested Luk Boral's 2005 record by .67 seconds.
Senior Catrina Roth broke the SU record in the 100 Backstroke which she set in 2007. She finished 10th in the finals with a time of 55.36, improving her previous record by 1.14 seconds. She then helped the women's team of senior Dani Stein, sophomore Natalie Mazzetta and sophomore Katlin O'Hara register a time of 3:47.95 in the 400 Medley Relay, also a Syracuse school record. The men's team of sophomore Berk Kahraman, Kotynia, junior Boldizsar Kiss and junior Alex Taraskin mirrored the women in the events with a SU record-breaking time of 3:16.63.
Kiss led the Orange in the evening finals. He finished third in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:37.30. Kotynia followed his morning performance with a third place finish in the 100 Breaststroke finals touching the wall in 54.85. Mazzetta placed 13th in the 400 IM to open the evening finals. She had a time of 4:25.00. Senior Sarah Manning competed in the 200 Freestyle and touched the wall in 1:50.22 for 12th place overall. Stein rounded out the individual performances with a 14th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.10.
The Orange swimmers are back in action for the final day of the BIG EAST Championship in Indianapolis. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals beginning at 6 p.m. in the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
