Orange Comes Up Short at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – The Orange (7-5-3, 3-5-1) saw its two-game winning streak stopped on Saturday, Oct. 25 with a 1-0 loss to BIG EAST Red Division rival Cincinnati. Brad Simpson, Cincinnati’s lone senior, scored the game-winner in the 68th minute on Senior Night at Gettler Stadium.
Syacuse senior goalie Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) finished with five saves for the Orange. Classmate Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) led the visitors with three shots.

The Bearcats’ Branden Stelmak recorded the only two shots on goal of the opening period, but Cavicchia was there both times for Syracuse to keep the match scoreless. Hall attempted both shots for the Orange in the opening period. Neither was on goal.
In the second half, Simpson put the Bearcats (6-8-2, 3-5-1) in front, 1-0, with his fourth goal of the year at 67:58. Simpson headed a long free kick by Nick Weightmann past Cavicchia to give the Bearcats the lead.
Senior Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) registered the Orange's best chance to notch the equalizer, putting Syracuse’s only shot on goal at the 82:53 mark, but Cincinnati goalkeeper Matt Williams was there to make the save. Hall followed it up with another attempt, but the Orange could not find the mark and the Bearcats held on for the victory.
Syracuse continues its road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 29 with a 3 p.m. match at Villanova.
Match Notes: The all-time series between the Orange and Bearcats is tied at 2-2 … The home team has won every match in the series … Cavicchia’s five saves increased his career total to 286.
