LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The SU men’s soccer team (5-5-4, 2-5-0) lost a 1-0 decision to #25 Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Cardinal Park. Down by one, the Orange put two shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, but couldn’t even the match.
Syracuse registered four of its five shots in the second half, including one by junior Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) in the 82nd minute that was stopped by David Simolike. Sophomore forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) registered the Orange's best scoring chance of the night in the 87th minute. He was one-on-one with the keeper, but Simolike was up to the challenge again, making his second save of the night to hold off the SU charge.
The Cardinals’ Othaniel Yanez scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 67th minute. Aaron Clapham fired a shot from 18 feet out that deflected off Yanez and trickled inside the post to provide the winning margin.
"We're disappointed with the loss, but we're not discouraged" SU head coach Dean Foti said. "We got three BIG EAST home games coming up and we're looking forward to hopefully getting some points in the standings."
The Cardinals (9-4-1, 5-2-1) registered 19 shot attempts, but most did not test Orange keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario). He made one save in the contest. SU also recorded a team save.
Simolike picked up the win, earning his fifth shutout against a conference foe this season.
Orange sophomore Erik Kreider (Webster, N.Y.) made his first career start in the contest. He played 74 minutes.
Syracuse will play three of its final four regular-season matches at home, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Villanova on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
