SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Duan recorded 16 kills and a season-high 19 digs to lead the Syracuse Orange volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-23, 32-30, 30-22) sweep of Georgetown in its BIG EAST and home opener tonight in Manley Field House.
Duan was one short of her career-high 20 digs, which she has done three times. Senior Katie Allen set new career highs in kills with 15 and in hitting percentage as she hit .583. Senior Aila Dommestrup dished out 40 assists in the win.
In game one, SU took a quick 6-1 lead capped with one of Allen’s kills. The Hoyas bounced back and tied the game at 11-11 with the help of a pair of Orange service errors. The two teams battled to 17-15, but SU went on to gain a 22-17 edge. SU never looked back, and took the game with a Cheryl Cobbina kill, 30-23.
In game two, GU took the early lead 4-1 in part to a few hitting errors by SU. The Orange roared back with a four-point run with the aid of Duan and Allen kills to take a 5-4 lead. The Hoyas regained the lead at 15-14 due to an SU ball handling error, and two more Georgetown points gave the Hoyas a 17-14 advantage. Sophomore Joscie Kaup got to the service line and rattled off three-straight points, capped by a service ace, to tie the game at 17-17. The two teams then battled back and forth and were tied at 29-29. Jessica Buffum put down one of her nine kills on the night to set up a game point for Georgetown. Dommestrup, who hit .883 with five kills, snuck a ball past the GU defense to deadlock the game at 30-30. A Hoya attacking error gave SU a 31-30 lead, then senior Kristen Conway put the game away with one of her 10 kills.
In game three, the teams fought off rallies and found themselves tied at 19-19. Senior Kathryn Dercher then served six-consecutive points to give SU a 25-19 lead, and the Hoyas would not get close after that.
For Georgetown (4-9, 0-1 BIG EAST), Rachel Nelson had a team-high 10 kills and nine digs. Katherine Niesen added eight kills. Kate Fisher added 18 assists, while Caitlin Boland had 19.
SU (9-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when it hosts South Florida in another BIG EAST matchup.
