Volleyball Wins Five-Game Battle Against St. John's

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team won its third consecutive BIG EAST match with a 3-2 (26-30, 31-29, 30-16, 30-26, 15-12) decision against St. John’s on Friday, Oct. 22. The Orange (19-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) is currently on a six-match winning streak. With the loss, St. John’s is now 14-8, 0-3 in the BIG EAST.
Juniors Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway both recorded double-doubles in the match. Duan had 16 kills and 11 digs, as well as five block assists. Conway had 13 kills and 10 digs, and six block assists. Junior Aila Dommestrup had 52 assists, freshmen Joscie Kaup made 14 digs and Cheryl Cobbina had 11 kills.
Sophomore Erin McQuillin and freshman Jen Malcom both set new personal-bests in blocks. McQuillin had a career-best 11 block assists, while Malcom had a career-high four solo blocks, as well as a career-best 13 kills.
For the Red Storm, Jackie Ahlers posted 34 kills on 62 attempts with a .387 hitting percentage. Molly Roloff had 37 assists, and Nicole Colaluca finished with 17 digs.
Blocking was the key to victory for SU. The Orange finished with 20.0 team blocks, while St. John’s had 8.0. For the match, SU recorded four solo blocks and 32 block assists.
SU ended a four-match skid against the Red Storm, and takes a 6-5 series advantage. St. John’s head coach Joanne Persico-Smith is a former SU volleyball player and a member of the Orange Plus Hall of Fame.
Syracuse plays its final non-conference match when it travels to Rider on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m.
