Volleyball Downs Scarlet Knights, 3-2

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team won its third straight match as it defeated Rutgers, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in College Avenue Gym.
The Orangewomen (13-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) won the fifth game by a score of 17-15 to earn its second BIG EAST victory. SU won its second straight match in five games and secured three victories on the road in three days.
Syracuse now leads the series against Rutgers, 8-5. Rutgers (11-6, 0-2 BIG EAST) commited 22 service errors in the match, compared to Syracuse’s three.
A group of freshmen helped lead the Orangewomen to victory. Freshman Kristen Conway (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) recorded her fourth collegiate double-double with 13 kills and a personal-best 16 digs. Classmate Aila Dommestrup (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) quarterbacked the offense with 42 assists and chipped in four block assists. Freshmen Kathryn Dercher (Weatherby Lake, MO/Park Hill) and Kelly Duan (Baotou City/Zhong Shan University) both recorded career highs with 18 digs each. Duan also recorded nine kills for the third consecutive match.
Sophomore Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) hit in double figures with 10 kills. Junior co-captain Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) posted 13 digs, and senior co-captain Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) recorded eight kills and six total blocks.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it faces Villanova on the road at 2 p.m.
