
Syracuse Splits First Day Action At War Eagle Tournament

Syracuse University women’s volleyball team defeated Auburn, 3-0, in its first match of the War Eagle Tournament held at Auburn University in Auburn, AL on Saturday afternoon. The Orangewomen (3-3) lost, 3-0, in their evening match to Charlotte.
In the win versus Auburn (1-6), senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) was one kill short of a triple-double with a career-high nine kills, 28 assists and 16 digs. Carroll was perfect with no hitting errors for a .692 attack percentage. Freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) was one dig short of a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs, and teammate Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield)hit for double-digits with 11 kills and six total blocks (3 solo, 3 assists). Junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) topped a career-high with three solo blocks and finished the match with six total blocks.
Charlotte (4-2) hit .262 as a team to sweep SU in three games. The Orangewomen recorded 31 hitting errors, compared to the 49ers’ 14 and were outblocked 11-2. Koster led the SU offense with eight kills, and Carroll was one of four Orangewomen to tally double figures in digs with 12. Senior Jing Jing Wang (Beijing, China/Beijing University of Physical Education), sophomore Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) and sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) all recorded 10 digs each.
SU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 against Jacksonville at noon in the second day of the War Eagle Tournament in Auburn, AL.
