
Orange Volleyball Loses To St. John's In Season Finale

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team lost to St. John’s, 3-0, in its last match of the season. The Orangewomen’s 2001 final record is 14-13 overall and 3-9 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm extended its record to 18-9 and 6-6 in the BIG EAST.
SU hit .149 compared to the Red Storm’s .220. Freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) led the SU offense with nine kills. She finished fourth on the team in kills with 216. Senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) followed with seven kills and four digs. Sophomore Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) recorded a team-high seven digs.
St. John’s recorded 11 service aces in the match, while SU recorded only two on the day. Kristy Mercein led the Red Storm with 14 kills and 12 digs.
Seniors Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township), Carol Munger and Jing Jing Wang (Beijing University for Physical Education/Beijing, China) played their last match as Orangewomen. Carroll dished out 27 assists and finished the season with 988 assists, placing her 10th on SU’s single-season assists list. The all-time assists leader at SU, Carroll has finished in the top ten at SU for most assists in a single season all four years.
