Lauzon brings nearly three decades of experience across the NFL, NBA, NHL and Power 4 to lead Syracuse Athletics’ integrated health, wellness and sport performance operation.
Syracuse Athletics has hired Marty Lauzon, ATC, PT, SCS, Cert DN, as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Integrated Health, Wellness and Sports Performance. Lauzon, who has nearly three decades of experience across the NFL, NBA, NHL and Power 4, began his new role on Monday, Sept. 21.
Lauzon fills a vacant position to serve as the primary administrative leader for all health, safety, and wellness functions within Syracuse Athletics, overseeing athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, and mental health/sport psychology.
"I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Syracuse University Athletics," Lauzon said. "Throughout my career, my focus has always been on building programs that put athlete health and performance first, and I look forward to bringing that same approach to Syracuse. I want to thank Bryan Blair, Dr. Charles Small and the search committee for their trust, and I can't wait to get to work supporting our student-athletes and staff."
Lauzon joins Syracuse after a distinguished 27-plus-year career spanning professional and collegiate sports. He spent the last year with Peachtree Orthopedics. Prior to that, he served as Director of High Performance for the Pittsburgh Penguins, overseeing injury prevention, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and rehabilitation programs. He also spent two seasons (2021–2023) with the Atlanta Hawks as Director of Athletic Performance and Sports Medicine.
"Marty brings a rare combination of experience across the NFL, NBA, and NHL, and we are thrilled to welcome someone of his caliber to lead our health, wellness, and performance efforts," said Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair. "Our student-athlete's health, safety and development is our most mission critical responsibility and this role leads many of those efforts. His track record of building high-performing medical and performance programs will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes and our department as a whole. I want to thank Dr. Charles Small for leading this search and recruiting this level of talent to join our Orange family."
Much of Lauzon's career has been spent in the NFL. His 21-years in the league began with the Cleveland Browns (1999–2009) and continued with an 11-year tenure with the Atlanta Falcons (2010–2021).
"Marty Lauzon is one of the best in the business," said Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn, who spent six seasons in Atlanta with Lauzon. "He has a rare ability to connect with players, coaches and support staff and be able to communicate clearly between the groups. Marty's care for everyone in the programs he has been a part of has been truly exceptional. Syracuse got themselves a real heavy hitter!"
He joined the Falcons as Head Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist (2010–2013) before being promoted to Director of Sports Medicine and Performance (2013–2021), where he oversaw all facets of player health and performance. During his time in Atlanta, the Falcons won three NFC South titles, captured the NFC Championship in 2017, and advanced to Super Bowl LI.
"Marty's professional career speaks for itself. His character and genuine connection to people is what sets him apart as someone who's uniquely qualified for this role at Syracuse," said longtime NFL executive Phil Savage. "He checks every box and will be a tremendous asset for the Orange coaches, players and administration."
Lauzon began his career at UCLA, serving as Director of Rehabilitation for the athletic department from 1997 to 1999.
A native of Beloeil, Quebec, Lauzon earned his Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Ottawa in 1994. He is a certified athletic trainer and is certified as a specialist in sports physical therapy by the American Physical Therapy Association.
