Syracuse Falls to Pitt in the Women's Building

The Syracuse volleyball team closed out its weekend home stand on Sunday afternoon at the Women's Building, falling to Pitt 3-0, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20.
Kiernan Stamey led the Orange offense with 14 kills on a .303 hitting percentage, adding seven digs and three block assists. Emma Williams followed with eight kills and an ace. Charis Burge ran the offense with 27 assists, to go with four digs, two kills and a service ace.
Yuka Urano paced the Syracuse defense with 11 digs and served an ace, while Marie Laurio added eight digs. Abby Nicholson tallied two blocks (one solo, two assisted) to lead the Orange at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the teams traded points to open the set, the Panthers took the leas, and a 3-0 run pushed their advantage to 12-7. Syracuse trimmed the deficit to as few as five points late, including an ace from Burge at 20-24, but Pitt closed out the 25-20 win.
The Orange led early in the second set. A Keila Gabriel kill and back-to-back blocks, from Stamey and Nicholson and then Nicholson and Gabriel, gave Syracuse a 3-0 start. The Orange pushed the lead to 6-2 and was still up 9-6 when Pitt answered with a run to take a 15-9 lead. Syracuse battled back to within two at 19-17, but the Panthers scored the next four points to take set two.
After the teams were tied at 2-2, Pitt used a 4-0 run to build an 8-3 lead. Syracuse chipped away behind Stamey and Williams, scoring seven of nine points to close within 20-18, but Pitt went on a run to take the third set, and the match, 3-0.
NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
Syracuse continues ACC play, hitting the road to take on NC State on Friday and Wake Forest on Sunday.
