SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Volleyball program (7-2, 0-0 ACC) began the Syracuse Invitational on Friday evening, taking on the Siena Saints (3-7, 0-0 MAAC) at the Women's Building. After suffering its first two losses of the season last weekend, Syracuse got back on track with a convincing 3-0 sweep of the Saints.
Paving the way was Veronica Sierzant, earning the start on Friday and making the most of her time on the court. Playing a hybrid role in the Syracuse offense, Sierzant racked up a season-high 10 kills on 12 attempts to go with two assists and two blocks. Gabby McLaughlin once again paced the offense, totaling 14 kills on 29 attempts.
As a collective, the team posted a .455 hitting percentage, its best in a single match this season. The Orange also posted nine aces in the win, with Reese Teves accounting for a third of those.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange didn't get out to the start they wanted, falling in an early 5-1 hole in the opening set. It took a bit for them to find their rhythm, but once the Orange offense started clicking, it was all Syracuse. 'Cuse would bring things level at nine points apiece and proceeded to go on an 8-2 run to build itself a sizable cushion. Sierzant would eventually put the finishing touches on the set to earn a 25-19 win in the opening frame.
The two squads traded blows to open the second set, seeing things tied up at six points apiece. The Orange went on to secure seven straight points, with McLaughlin controlling serve for Syracuse. The Saints battled back, but another Sierzant kill would eventually seal up a win in the second set, 25-14.
Syracuse kept its foot on the gas in the third set, going on another one of its trademark runs. The Orange rattled off six-straight points to open up a 13-7 lead in the middle of the set. The Saints put an end to the run, but 'Cuse had one final burst left. The Orange went on to score seven unanswered to win the set, 25-17. Freshman Marie Laurio would notch the final point, capping off a set where she recorded four kills on six swings in addition to a solo block.
The win elevates the Orange to 7-2 on the season and snaps a two-match skid.
