On Saturday, May 17 the Syracuse men's rowing team officially welcomed the Paul A. Dierkes '79 racing shell to the Orange fleet. Donated and named by Paul Dierkes, the shell was christened ahead of the 2025 Eastern Sprints where the Varsity 8 raced in the new Pocock eight placing eighth overall and second in the Petite Final on Sunday.Â
"I want to publicly thank Paul for donating this shell," said Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman during the Boat Dedication. "When we started out the championship journey which is a fundraiser that kind of culminated this year, it was a five year plan and Paul immediately stepped up and said 'I want to buy the boat the Varsity's racing in 2025 when the championship campaign is over. So thank you."
Dierkes arrived on campus in the fall of 1975 and walked on to the men's rowing team that won the Freshman 8 National Championship. He competed in the 2V8 and pushed the Varsity 8 all season ultimately leading to the Orange V8 being crowned National Champions. Unfortunately, Dierkes' rowing career was cut short with a season-ending injury preventing him from being a member of the V8 that went on to win a title for Syracuse at the IRA. He went on to a successful career as one of the top architects for residential construction in New York City after and has done extensive work in Europe after earning his Masters in Architecture from Syracuse University.
The Varsity 8 will race the Paul A. Dierkes '79 at the upcoming Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta May 30-June 1 in Camden, NJ.Â
