CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Syracuse was defeated by Virginia (8-5, 1-2 ACC) in four sets (25-18, 25-16, 14-25, 25-16) on Friday night for their third loss in ACC play. The Orange were led by junior Cherlin Antonio with 16 kills and three total blocks. Freshman Zharia Harris-Waddy was a significant contributor with five service aces and two solo blocks.
Â
'Cuse (2-11, 0-3 ACC) began the match with a bang, scoring the first three points of the first set including an ace by graduate Alyssa Bert. Virginia retaliated with a four-point run to steal the early lead, 4-3. After some back-and-forth play, the Cavaliers went on a 6-1 run to take the lead, 9-13, forcing an Orange timeout. Four kills from Antonio after the timeout was not enough, as Virginia took the set 25-18.
Â
The Orange played from behind for the entirety of the second set, coming within one point six times. While 'Cuse was down 9-8, Virgnia produced scoring run of 9-2 that brought its lead to 18-10. An Orange run of 5-2 later in the set was not enough, as the Cavaliers went on to win the frame 25-16.
Â
Syracuse turned it on for the third set, taking an early two-point lead at 3-1. Virginia was able to tie the match at 9-9, but 'Cuse never let them take the lead as it would go on a 9-2 point-run powered by four straight service aces from freshman Zharia Harris-Waddy, making the score 18-11 in favor of the Orange. A late 'Cuse scoring run of 7-2 led to its first set win of ACC play, 25-14.
Â
After losing the previous frame, Virginia came into the fourth set looking to bury it away, scoring the first two points. The Orange were able to tie the match at 3-3, but a Cavalier run of 5-1 put the score at 8-4 and the match out of reach for 'Cuse. Virginia built on its lead, finishing the set on a 6-3 point-run to end the frame and match, 25-16.
