10/27/2023 9:34:00 PM | Volleyball
Freshman Veronica Sierzant led the Syracuse volleyball team (2-19, 0-11 ACC) with 10 kills and 16 assists in a 3-0 loss to Clemson on Friday night at the Women's Building. The Orange return to action on Sunday against #11 Georgia Tech at 1 p.m.
"Overall I think we did a really good job carrying over what we started against Florida State into this weekend," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "We were short a couple of executions at the end in that first set and at the end [of the match] I think we ran a little bit out of gas especially regarding our transition work. But overall good steps we took forward so far this weekend.
Syracuse and Clemson exchanged the lead four times and had 12 ties during the opening frame. With the match tied for the final time at 22-all, Clemson pulled ahead 23-22 with a kill by Kennedy Wagner. Ganesharatnam called timeout to slow the Tigers and rally his team, which resulted in a Clemson service error out of the gate to bring the score to 24-23. The Tigers secured the opening set win on an attack error by the Orange on the next rally, to take the frame 25-23.
In the second set, Clemson took its biggest lead of the frame at 16-11 after four-straight kills be the Tigers. Syracuse was able to keep the match within five points but Clemson went on to win the second, 25-17, and lead 2-0 overall. Sierzant had four kills in the middle set and hit .333 (4-for-9) in the frame.
Clemson completed the sweep winning the final set by its largest margin, 25-15. Zharia Harris-Waddy recorded four kills on six attacks in the frame for a .667 clip while Alyssa Bert added four digs.
