SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Allie Olnowich (ice hockey) and Silas Derfel (men's track and field/cross country) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 2.
Olnowich, a native of Chatham, New Jersey, is a senior sport management major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. She was named an American Hockey All-American Scholar last season and has earned spots on the College Hockey America (CHA)Â All-Academic team three years in a row. Off the ice, Olnowich and teammate Lindsay Eastwood create and edit videos for the ACC Network and @cuseice social media accounts.Â
On the ice, Olonwich scored the opening goal in last season's CHA Championship game that led Syracuse to its first NCAA tournament appearance. Throughout her career she has appeared in over 100 games, registering five goals and seven assists.Â
The CHAÂ tournament kicks off Thursday at 3 p.m. when defending CHA Tournament Champion and three-seed Syracuse takes on six-seed Lindenwood in the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y. Fans can watch the action via the CHA Digital Network. Full information about the tournament can be found here. A win Thursday would see Syracuse take on two-seed Robert Morris Friday at 4 p.m.
Derfel, a sophomore from Ithaca, N.Y., is a health and science major in the School of Education and has twice been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. A distance runner, Derfel set a personal record when he won the 3000m in 8:41.13 at the Marc Deneault Invitational on Feb. 22.
Derfel and the men's track team open the outdoor season Friday, March 27 in Raleigh, N.C. with the Raleigh Relays.
