SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Amanda Bäckebo (ice hockey) and Iliass Aouani (track/cross country) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of February 10.
Bäckebo, a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), is a senior from Gagnef, Sweden. She is a three-time College Hockey America (CHA) All-Academic Team member and a 2018-19 American Hockey Coaches Association American Scholar. Bäckebo also earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester since fll 2016, and she's on the VPA Dean's List for every semester since fall 2017.
On the ice, Bäckebo has contributed seven points in 107 games and was a member of the 2019 Syracuse squad that brought home the first CHA Tournament title in program history. She most recently set up freshman teammate Brynn Koocher to score the game-winning goal against Robert Morris on Jan. 18 that gave head coach Paul Flanagan his 400th career win.
Aouani, a native of Milan, Italy, is a structural engineering graduate student in the College of Engineering and Computer Science who earned his bachelor's in civil engineering in 2019. Aouani was a 2017 USTFCCCA Academic All-American and earned a spot on the 2018 USTFCCCA All-Academic team. He's earned spots on the 2017 and 2018 All ACC-Academic teams, was on the 2018 Engineering and Computer Science Dean's List, and is on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for every semester since fall 2016.
Athletically, Aouani is one of the best to come through Syracuse. In cross country, Aouani earned a spot on the 2016 All-ACC team and both the 2016 and 2018 USTFCCCA All-Northeast Region teams. He broke both the Syracuse and ACC records in the outdoor 10k at the 2019 Stanford Invitational with a time of 28:25.36. He was also a two-time first team All-ACC selection last year for the indoor 3000m and 5k.
