RALEIGH, N.C. – A complete performance helped Syracuse volleyball (6-11, 3-7 ACC) to its third victory in conference play Sunday afternoon over NC State (8-14, 3-7 ACC). The Orange snapped a three-match losing streak, sweeping the Wolfpack by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 26-24. For Syracuse, it was the first win in Raleigh in program history. The Orange accumulated a season-low seven attack errors and a .336 hitting percentage.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set was neck-and-neck throughout, as each team could only grow a lead as large as four points. The Orange initially fell behind, 9-5, but two of Polina Shemanova's 22 total kills and a kill from Abby Casiano brought 'Cuse back to within one. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the frame, but two 3-0 runs for the Orange helped secure the set. Five different Syracuse players provided at least a kill and Shemanova led the way with eight.
Â
The tight play continued in the second stanza, as Syracuse came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score at 10 thanks to two blocks from Dana Gardner. After setting a career-high with six blocks on Friday night at North Carolina, the junior came back with five this afternoon, leading the Orange in both contests. The score in the set was tied at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 before Syracuse edged the Wolfpack, 25-23. Yuliia Yastrub posted four of her season-high eight kills in the middle frame.
Â
The teams continued to exchange points throughout the third set and NC State led, 24-23, with a chance to force a fourth set. Elena Karakasi responded with a kill to tie the score at 24 and two Wolfpack attack errors sealed the sixth win of the season for the Orange.Â
Â
NOTEWORTHY
Karakasi and freshman Lauren Woodford each had 18 assists on the day for the Orange.
Â
