SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Philo Germano of the men's track and field team and Jasmine Nwajei of the women's basketball team are this week's Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
A graduate student from Albany, N.Y., Germano is pursuing a bachelor's degree in sports venue and event management. Germano is a Student-Athlete Advisory committee representative for the track and field team and is a five-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
A cross country runner and a distance runner for the track team, Germano primarily competes in the 1000m, the mile, the 3000m and the 5000m during track season. The graduate student set a new personal record, finishing the 1000m in 2:29.02 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Jan. 20, good for fifth at the meet. This past weekend, Germano was part of a team that placed first in the distance medley relay at the Cornell Deneault Memorial 2018.
Nwajei, a redshirt senior guard on the women's basketball team, is a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. She earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll this past semester for academic success.
In her first and final year with the Orange, Nwajei has helped the team to a 19-7 record, providing much needed support off the bench. She is averaging 9.5 minutes played per game with 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per outing. The Rockaway Park, N.Y. native posted a season-high 11 points against Morgan State in the season opener.
Germano and the track and field team are headed to Clemson, S.C. for the ACC Championships beginning on Feb. 22, while Nwajei and the women's basketball team hit the road for a two-game road stretch, facing off with Pittsburgh on Monday (7 p.m.) and North Carolina on Thursday (7 p.m.).
