
Cooney and Thevenin Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Graduate student Trevor Cooney of the men's basketball team and sophomore Tia Thevenin of the women's track and field team are this week's Orange Scholar Athletes of the Week.
Cooney is working on earning his Master's in instructional design, development and evaluation. The graduate student has played and started in all 23 games this season, scoring 13.7 points per game. Cooney currently ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 36.3 three-point field-goal percentage that includes 62 baskets from beyond the arc. As a key component of the Orange, Cooney ranks sixth in the nation with 851 total minutes played.
Thevenin is a dual major in entrepreneurship and psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. The sophomore most recently turned in the fastest collegiate time in the 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 8.39 seconds at the Penn State National. Thevenin finished fifth overall in the event and her semifinal time of 8.36 seconds currently ranks 26th nationally. She also won the 60-meter hurdles women's event at the Cornell Upstate Challenge with a time of 8.46 this season.
Cooney and Syracuse are back in action on Tuesday night at home against Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets for the game be purchased online, in person at Gate B in the Carrier Dome and by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX.
Thevenin and the Orange will next take on the Armory Invitational on Friday, Feb. 5.Â
