SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After taking the first set in a dramatic 25-23 victory, the Syracuse Orange volleyball team (10-17, 2-10) dropped a 3-1 decision (25-23, 20-25, 25-26, 19-25) to the St. John's Red Storm (18-8, 5-5).
Sophomore outside hitter Nicolette Serratore recorded her fourth double-double performance of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs, while freshman outside hitter Silvi Uattara led the team with 17 kills.
Three Orange defenders recorded two solo blocks at the net, while senior middle blocker Samantha Hinz led the team with five blocks, including two solo blocks. Uattara and Gosia Wlaszczuk both added three and four blocks, respectively, including two solo blocks apiece.
Orange opened the first set fighting for the lead, before a 9-3 run extended the SU lead by six points, setting the score at 14-8. Uattara and Serratore led the Orange offensive strike recording two kills apiece during the run. The Red Storm began closing in on the Syracuse lead at the 23-22 mark, after two Orange attacking errors put St. John's within one point of the lead. A pair of kills was all SU need though, as the Orange took a one game advantage heading into the second set.
The Orange could not continue the offensive momentum in the second set, letting it slip away to tie the match at 2-2 heading into the third set. As both teams looked to jumpstart an offensive push, SU and St. John's traded the lead five times before a kill from Serratore put the Orange within two at 20-22 heading into a Syracuse timeout. Unable to make the final push after the break, the Orange fell 26-24 in the third set to put the Red Storm up 2-1 heading into the fourth set.
Despite maintaining a steady lead for most of the fourth set, the Red Storm began breaking down the Orange offense, going on a 4-0 run to pull away with a 16-12 lead. As SU tried to recover the lead, the offensive pressure was too much to overcome as SU handed St. John's the fourth set and the match, 3-1. Milica Krstojevic led the Red Storm with 13 kills, hitting at a team-high .550 clip.
