Syracuse student-athletes, coaches and administrators gathered to celebrate the department's success in 2010-11 at the fifth annual 'Cuse Awards at the Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center at Syracuse University.
The 2010 men's cross country and men's rowing teams shared the Team of the Year award.
The cross country squad won its second consecutive Northeast Region and BIG EAST Championship and matched a program-best 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championship. The Orange reached its highest national ranking, at ninth, and placed five student-athletes on the All-Northeast Region team, three on the All-BIG EAST team and had one All-American.
The Orange men's rowing squad placed seventh in the Ten Eyck Team Championship at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta. The varsity eight finished sixth and the junior varsity eight was seventh.
Women's field hockey senior Martina Loncarica won the Female Athlete of the Year Award, while senior men's lacrosse goalie John Galloway earned the Male Athlete of the Year honor.
A BIG EAST Conference First Team selection, Loncarica was also recognized on the Longsreth/NFHCA Division I All-American First Team and Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast First Team. She also was a member of the womensfieldhockey.com All-American First Team and the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.
Galloway earned first-team All-America honors and was named the USILA National and BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010. He set the NCAA record for the most career wins by a goalkeeper and currently he ranks ninth in NCAA history in career goals-against average at 7.4.
Head football coach Doug Marrone earned the Coach of the Year award. The AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year, Marrone led the Orange to an 8-5 record and the 2010 New Era Pinstripe Bowl championship. It was SU's first winning season and first bowl victory since 2001. The team's four BIG EAST road victories are a first in program history.
The 2011 Soladay Awards were presented to tennis student-athlete Simone Kalhorn and rowing student-athlete Daniel Berry.
Kalhorn was a four year varsity letter winner and team captain during her junior and senior years. She was on the Big-East All-Academic team, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and Dean's List for four years and is a member of the National Society for College Scholars. While at Syracuse, Kalhorn taught tennis at Drumlins Country Club as a part of a kids volunteer program. She also tutored other student-athletes on campus. Recently named a Big East Athlete of the Week, she was undefeated in singles during her junior year and will turn pro in May after graduation before attending medical school. Kalhorn is a ranked player on the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) tour, earning her ranking while playing at Syracuse University.
Berry was a three year varsity letter winner for the men's rowing team. During his last two years at Syracuse University, the Berry has rowed in the varsity eight that has won the Syracuse Invitational Regatta and the Princeton Chase Invitational and finished sixth at the IRA Grand Final National Championship and eighth at the Eastern Sprints. At Syracuse, he spent five semesters volunteering at the VA hospital helping elderly veterans with transportation throughout the hospital, as well as three semesters volunteering as a Juvenile Mentor for juvenile inmates at the Onondaga County Justice Center. Upon graduation he will be commissioning into the Army as a Second Lieutenant Ordnance Officer of the 20 Engineering Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division.
Football punter Rob Long won the 2011 Ernie Davis Courage Award, presented annually to a student-athlete who has overcome a socially, economically or otherwise disadvantaged background or serious injury and, in the opinion of his or her coaches and teammates, has demonstrated uncommon bravery or highly principled behavior in the face of adversity. Long was diagnosed in December with a brain tumor, which was successfully removed, and underwent chemotherapy and radiation. He is now working out in hopes of making a roster in the National Football League.
First-year student-athletes Laura Hahnefeldt and Ross Krautman were named the Female and Male Rookies of the Year.
As a member of the 2010 field hockey squad, Hahnefeldt was recognized on the NFHCA Division I All-America Second Team and All-Mideast Region First Team. She was also named to the All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team.
A Sporting News Freshman All-American and All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, Krautman tied the Syracuse single-season record for field goals made (18) and field goal percentage (.947) in 2010. He also tied the record for consecutive field goals made (16).
The football team received the Most Improved Team award. The Orange had its first winning season since 2001, finishing with an 8-5 record and had its first bowl game appearance since 2004, beating Kansas State, 36-34, at the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
Women's basketball senior Erica Morrow earned the Performance of the Year award after netting a game-best 27 points to lead Syracuse to a 75-66 win against #6 Ohio State. Loncarica's goal against UConn in the second overtime to clinch the field hockey team's third consecutive BIG EAST Conference regular season championship was named the Play of the Year.
Freshman C.J. Fair's jaw-dropping dunk against Cornell earned the Shot of the Year award, while football's Anthony Perkins and Shamarko Thomas earned the Defensive Play of the Year for their sack at the end of the West Virginia game, which gave Syracuse its first victory against West Virginia since 2001.
The 2010 Orange football team earned the Game of the Year accolade for the its 36-34 victory against Kansas State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in December. The Orange made a triumphant return to the post-season with a thrilling victory in the bowl game played at Yankee Stadium. Syracuse amassed nearly 500 yards of total offense in this see-saw battle that was tied three times. A 60-yard run by Delone Carter set up a 39-yard Ross Krautman field goal for what turned out to be the winning score.
Women's lacrosse student-athlete Lindsay Rogers was recognized with the Unsung Hero for her dedication to the program. Rogers suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fifth game of last season. She continued to attend every practice and traveled with the team, providing encouragement and helpful tips from the sideline. Rogers came back for a fifth year this season and again injured her ACL. She is currently going through rehabilitation and plans to try to play again this season. Rogers routinely stays after practice to work with the younger players. She also coordinates the team's community service projects. Rogers is a three-time team captain.
Seven student-athletes were recognized for their All-America honors during this past year, including Galloway and Loncarica, men's and women's lacrosse standouts John Lade, Joel White, Christina Dove, and Liz Hogan, as well as cross country student-athlete Pat Dupont. Dove was also an ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honoree.
The volleyball team won the Grade Point Average award for the best GPA during the fall and spring semesters, respectively. The women's basketball team won the 'Cuse Cares Award for its community engagement and the women's lacrosse team was recognized for earning the most NACDA Cup points this past year.
A team 'Cuse Award was presented to a member of each of Syracuse's 22 varsity squads. The 'Cuse Award in each sport is given to the student-athlete who, in the opinion of his or her teammates, best represents a major contributor to the team, provides effective leadership, exhibits good sportsmanship, demonstrates commitment to academics, understands the importance of community service and demonstrates school spirit.
